Hall Effect Speed Sensors

MSI Hall Effect sensors are integrated units containing the transducer, magnet (as applicable), and electronics that are used to provide zero speed sensing. We manufacture them in both oriented and non-oriented models. Both types have safeguards built into their circuits to prevent damage from incorrect hookup and can be obtained in models that produce the most popular digital outputs.

Oriented Hall Effect Sensors
Require orientation to the direction of target movement

  • H Series - Magnet is incorporated in the sensor

  • HM Series - Magnet is incorporated in the target
  • Hall Effect Sensor in threaded body with pigtail cable

    Non-Oriented Hall Effect Sensors
Do not require orientation to the direction of target movement

  • HN Series - Magnet is incorporated in the sensor

  • Hermetically Sealed Hall Effect Sensor

Dual Channel, Bi-directional Hall Effect Sensor with mounting flange and alignment pin

    Dual Channel Hall Effect Sensors
  • Based on H Series - Provides Quadrature (Bi-Directional) output to sense target direction of travel or redundancy for backup protection
  • Based on HM Series - Offers two output channels set to sense both north and south oriented magnets or only north or south, respectively
  •

How do VR Speed Sensors Work?

Designed for all types of environments and user specifications. Options include hermetically sealed, epoxy encapsulated, cryogenic, high temperature, intrinsically safe and explosion proof sensors.

    Hermetically Sealed VR Speed Sensors

    Epoxy Encapsulated VR Speed Sensors

    Premium Series

    Hermetically Sealed VR Speed Sensors

VR sensors with the ability to withstand high levels of abuse in cryogenics, high temperature and other severe environments and are ideally suited for providing trouble-free service in harsh environments. Standard models operational to 450°F. Includes Humbucking VR Sensors which offer resistance to electrical noise interference with little or no loss in signal strength.

    Value Series

    Epoxy Encapsulated VR Speed Sensors

This series offers a low cost, high-value sensor option for applications without the severe environmental conditions and thermocycling of the Premium Series Sensors. Features includes welded connector, stainless steel fronts, and operation up to 450°F.

    High Temperature VR Speed Sensors

    Amplified VR Speed Sensors

    Premium Series

    High Temperature VR Speed Sensors

VR sensors with a broad temperature range of –450°F to +850°F continuously and 1000°F intermittently makes this series a choice for applications with extremely high temperatures. Available with MIL series connector or thermocouple pigtail leads.

    Premium or Value Series

    Amplified VR Speed Sensors

Amplified, or Active, VR sensors integrate a preamplifier/signal conditioner within the sensor housing and offer excellent noise immunity and greater transmission capability. Sensors offer near-zero velocity (2 Hz) speed sensing, large air gap capability, and several digital output choices.

    RF Speed Sensors

How Do RF Speed Sensors Work?

    Standard RF Speed Sensors

    High Temperature RF Speed Sensors

Standard versions have open fronts and are epoxy encapsulated. Models are also available with closed fronts as well as hermetically sealed versions for applications that require protection from moisture and other fluids.

RF Sensors with a temperature range up to 750°F.

    Amplified RF Speed Sensors

Amplified sensors integrate a preamplifier within the sensor housing and offer excellent noise immunity and greater transmission capability. Sensors offer near-zero velocity (2 Hz) speed sensing, large air gap capability, and several digital output choices.

    Digi-Pulse Sensors

Digi-Pulse speed sensors combine high-sensitivity amplifiers with variable reluctance (VR) or modulated carrier transducers (RF). Unique features include near zero velocity (2 Hz) speed sensing, large air gap capability, and several choices of digital output. By combining the sensor and preamplifier in one unit, reductions in overall cost can be attained especially when preamplifier enclosures and installation labor are considered.

Digi-Pulse sensors are available in both hermetically sealed and encapsulated models and can be customized to satisfy specific requirements. These sensors also have EU certification for emissions and immunity (CE mark) and comply with EMC directive 89/336/EEC for installation into any environment.

VR and RF Digi-Pulse Sensors - Models using VR and RF transducers with digital output options are available.

Intrinsically Safe Digi-Pulse Sensors - Intrinsically Safe sensors are certified for use in both North America (CSA with NRTL/C) and Europe (ATEX) to the most stringent requirements. Our certification allows us to make intrinsically safe versions of almost any current Digi-Pulse sensor, or to customize a sensor to suit your application.

Custom Digi-Pulse Sensors - We welcome the opportunity to develop a product specifically suited to your application or to modify an existing product to suit your needs. We have extensive experience in designing custom products and pride ourselves on the ability to provide high quality custom products at reasonable prices.

    Magneto-Resistive Sensors

MSI produces MR sensors using both Giant Magneto-Resistive (GMR) and Anisotropic Magneto-Resistive (AMR) technologies. These sensors, while similar to Hall Effect in operation, typically have much higher sensitivity and can detect very small changes in magnetic fields.

Versions are available that can provide quadrature (bi-directional) or single direction output. Both Hall Effect and Magneto-Resistive sensors are true zero-speed sensors. Magneto-Resistive sensors, because of their higher sensitivity, are better suited for sensing ferrous metal targets at substantially longer distances; up to .250" or greater. The tradeoff is that they are more susceptible to producing false pulses from inductive fields. This might make them unsuitable for applications where they will be in close proximity to large motors or generators, etc. These sensors are built on a custom basis to satisfy specific application requirements.
